Sony’s Crackle Expands Ad-Supported Video Streaming
Crackle, Sony’s online video service, announced today that “a major programming expansion today; extending its full suite of ad-supported full-length movies and television series to all consumers with PlayStation 3 game consoles; Roku streaming
players; Sony’s Blu-ray players, BRAVIA televisions and Streaming Player with wifi; in addition to its previously announced launch on Google TV.” Sony said that Crackle is now “the only digital network to feature free-to-consumer full-length, unedited movies and television series on these platforms.” Most of Crackle’s programming consists of older shows and movies.
A similar video service opened for business last week. Screen Media Ventures, a movie distribution company, launched Popcornflix, a free ad supported movie streaming service. Paidcontent reports that Popcornflix movies consist of indie films. The service currently offers “a few hundred indie films and expects to have 1,500 movies available for streaming by the end of the year, said Gary Delfiner, Screen Media’s SVP of digital distribution.”
